Sadanand Varde
About & Legacy
Prof. Sadanand Krishnaji Varde popularly known as Anukaka (November 6, 1925 – January 29, 2007) was a principled leader in Maharashtra’s socio-political movement. In 1993, he became the Founding President of SAMARTHiN, guiding the policy analysis and citizen advocacy group until his final days and establishing it as a credible voice in governance.
Key Highlights
Democratic Struggle: Actively participated in the 1942 Quit India Movement and opposed the 1975 Emergency, serving 18 months in prison during each struggle.
Public Service & Education: An Economics Professor (Ph.D.), he served as a Municipal Councillor, Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), and Maharashtra’s Education Minister (1978), where he enacted major educational reforms.
Right to Die with Dignity: Pioneered the conversation on dignified death by tabling the first Private Member’s Bill on euthanasia in the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
Social Activism: Led the Rashtra Seva Dal and supported grassroots initiatives, including Shramjeevi Sanghatana, Sadhana weekly, and Sane Guruji Vikas Kendra.
