About – Samarthan

Our History

Established in 1997, Samarthan was founded with a mission to make democracy more meaningful by supporting the marginalized in the effort to make themselves heard. (Originating as a 'Vidhayak Sansad' project in 1993), Samarthan was founded by Vivek Bhau and Vidyullata Tai to serve as a crucial bridge between marginalized communities, policymakers, and the government. We work in partnership with people's organizations to further the interests of Dalits, Tribals, Women, Unorganized Labor, and other vulnerable sections of society. We are pioneers in India for lobbying the legislature on behalf of the poor, tribal, and deprived sections of society—a space previously dominated primarily by corporate groups.

Our Vision

Following founder Vivek Bhau's 1993 visit to the US, where he observed social organizations effectively lobbying parliament, Samarthan was formed to bring this systematic advocacy approach to India. Our vision is to ensure that grassroots issues and demands successfully reach the state legislature, driven by well-researched documentation. We believe democracy has meaning only if various marginalized groups are able to access the organs of democracy and address their concerns.

Our Mission

To act as a vital link connecting marginalized social groups, policymakers, and the governance system. To resolve rural and remote issues by coordinating with the Legislature, Ministries, and Human Rights Commissions. To deeply analyze government budgets and deliver this critical research directly to legislative members. To effectively utilize parliamentary tools (like starred questions and calling attention motions) to address social problems.
